CTE Program of Interest:  CDL course, which is basically drivers education for commercial vehicles.  This course includes classroom instruction and field experience.

\r\n

What is a Class A CDL?   A Class A commercial driver's license is required to operate any combination of vehicles including:

\r\n
  • Tractor-trailers

  • Truck and trailer combinations

  • Tank vehicles

  • Livestock carriers

  • Flatbeds

\r\n

Process to obtain CDL license:  The first process to obtain a CDL is to get a CDL learners permit.  This is done by completing three tests including air brake, combinations, and general knowledge exams.  After completing a physical and drug screen, the process becomes more difficult to obtain a Class A CDL including a pre-trip inspection and testing out in various parking maneuvers.  Preparing for this entire process and tons of practice driving is all made available through the CDL course at West Washington, which is instructed by Logan Tincher.

Plans after High School:  Spencer is excited about the opportunities that are available to him through accomplishing this process.  “My plan right after high school is to commit to a full time driving position. My long term goal with this is to learn the business etiquette and how to manage a trucking company and eventually own my own company one day,”  explained Spencer.

How has West Washington High School helped you prepare for your future plans?  Spencer is very grateful and is quick to give credit to those who have helped him accomplish his goal.  “Well for one, West Washington is one of the only schools in Indiana that offers a CDL class and they have done a great job at finding great teachers for this class over the past couple of years.  I would like to give a huge shoutout to Mr. Tincher for being a very committed and well rounded instructor to the CDL class.  I would also like to give another huge shout out to my uncle Rick Zink, who has been super supportive throughout this whole process, whether it be lending me one of his trucks for practice and testing or funding for the test itself,”  Spencer shared.

Spencer has made a lasting impression on the CDL class at West Washington:  Mr. Tincher has enjoyed helping Spencer through this process and has a great deal of respect for his work ethic.  “Spencer was a good student and very focused on the CDL.  He was always willing to jump in and show his skills,”  explained Mr. Tincher.
