Basketball

On November 15th West Washington (WW) athletes from the elementary school up to the high school showed off their talents. The Senator Madness event had three scrimmages. The 5th and 6th grade faced off followed by the 7th and 8th grade. The night ended with the high school athletes competing in a blue/white scrimmage.

Ashton Minton, the high school head coach, was pleased with his team's performance. “I thought it was good to see our guys get up and down a little bit in front of fans. Every quarter looked better and better as the night went on. It was good to see some different groups and combinations play with each other. The guys competed and put on a good showing for everyone. We have to continue to work on the details and continue to get better each and every day,” Minton said.

WW is unique because they house grades K-12 in the same building. It is only fitting to treat the basketball program in the same way. “I think it is important for all grades to showcase what they have each year. The elementary and junior high have been putting in the same amount of work the high school guys have, so it is good to reward them with playing in the ‘main gym’ and allow them to show off to the community as well. Also, those grades are the future of Senator basketball so we want everyone to get familiar with their faces and their game,” Minton said.

Soap and towel donations were accepted as admission into the scrimmages. The team and Coach Minton want to extend their thanks and appreciation to everyone who donated. They will have plenty of items to last the season.

The next time the J.V. and Varsity team will be in action is on Nov. 21st. WW will scrimmage Orleans at home. The scrimmage starts at 6 p.m. with two varsity quarters, followed by one J.V. quarter and then two more varsity quarters.

Community support is crucial for the success of WW athletic programs. “We ask that the community come out and support our teams throughout the season. We look forward to having an exciting season in elementary, junior high, and high school. These guys from top to bottom work really hard, so having a lot of fans in the stands will make the boys even more excited,” Minton said.
