The day before Thanksgiving the West Washington (WW) Boys Basketball team had their first game versus their county rival, Salem. The Senators came out victorious with the final score being 64-58.
The win was a large team effort. “Overall, everyone played well. Holden Russell led us with 32 points and 8 rebounds. He got to the paint a lot and made the right decision all night. Career night for him! Colton Brown chipped in 13 points and Hayden Morrow had 11 points and 3 rebounds. Everyone gave us decent minutes and it was a very energetic atmosphere and a good team win,” head coach Ashton Minton said.
The atmosphere and energy were high during the game. “Our energy was very high all night long from start to finish. I thought we executed the halftime adjustments and after timeouts. The team took what we talked about in those breaks and executed the plan on the floor,” Minton said.
This was Minton's first win as a head coach, but he gave all the recognition to his team. “All credit goes to the guys for our first win of the season. They played hard and played with a lot of energy and it was great to be a part of,” Minton said.
This week on the 6th WW will play against another county team, Eastern Pekin. “Pekin is going to come out and play hard from the start. Overall, three guys make their team go and they rely on those guys to do a lot for them. We have to take care of the ball and rebound. We have to make sure the shooter doesn’t get open looks and box out the bigs to limit second-chance points,” Minton said.
The J.V. tipoff against Eastern is at 6 p.m. with Varsity to follow. Come support your Senators in their second game of the season!
