The Elementary Senator Robotics Team competed on Saturday at the Musketeer Holiday Tournament, earning 9th place out of 26 teams in the skills component. Waylon Keltner also won an award for the most colorful Christmas sweater.
The West Washington Elementary Robotics Program has been active for four years and is open to 4th-6th graders. “To join, they must complete an application. Then, we review the applications. They must score a certain score to move on to the next part in the application process. After this, students' names are submitted to their current teachers. The teacher fills out a referral form. Finally, we use a rubric to see which students will be put on the roster for the year. We had over 50 applications this past year. We were able to have two teams this year, an away team and a home team. In total, we have twenty energetic students participating this year,” shared elementary teacher, Melissa Nicholson.
WWES Robotics meets twice a week after school, with practices running until around 5 p.m. each session. Last year’s team started early with practices beginning in September.
“We are competing in two competitions this school year. Also, we will have the playing field and robots at STEM night in April for kids and parents to enjoy,” Nicholson added.
For students interested in joining robotics, open enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year will begin at the start of next school year.
