The West Washington (WW) Senators played two games in the Loogootee Classic. They faced off against North Daviess and Loogootee in the tournament.
WW played North Daviess first where they fought it out in triple overtime. The Senators were one point short of winning and the final score was 59-58. That evening they played Loogootee and lost 46-36.
“Overall, on the day I thought we played very well on the defensive end in both games. In the first game against North Daviess, we had our chances to come away with the win and were in the right position,” head coach Ashton Minton said.
During the Loogootee game, senior Kree Zink went down with an injury. “Emotions were high the entire game and we just couldn’t get over the hump. Our kids stepped up and came together to get through a tough and emotional game. We have a really close team and you could really tell in the locker room on Saturday night both during halftime and at the end of the game,” Minton said.
Tournament play can help build endurance. “Playing multiple games in one day against good competition can take a toll both physically and mentally on our kids. However, we like playing in tournaments like these because in order to win a championship you have to win multiple games in consecutive days against good teams. It gives us a good opportunity to get prepared for the end of the season when sectional rolls around,” Minton said.
Catch the Senators in action on January 10th. WW will compete against Perry Central at home. “Perry Central is coming into our game playing with a lot of confidence at 8-3. They are playing really well early on in the season and I expect that to continue. They are long and physical and will get after you defensively. We have to do a good job of taking the positive things from our first 8 games and putting them all together to play well for 4 quarters,” Minton said.
The J.V. game will start at 6:30 p.m. with Varsity to follow.
