On Friday, January 17th West Washington (WW) played Springs Valley during the French Lick Homecoming. The Senators fought the Blackhawks into overtime but fell short of the win. The final score was 68-66. The next day the Senators lost to South Central with the final score being 68-50.
The Springs Valley game was up and down for both teams. The Senators led the score for most of the game while Valley stayed close behind.
“I thought we played very well in stretches. We had some really good looks and it was good to see a couple of shots go through. We haven’t been shooting a good percentage, but I felt like our offense was on point all night shooting a great percentage from the field, from three, and from the free throw line,” head coach Ashton Minton said.
As the season continues Minton has plans for the team to improve. “We have to continue to learn how to take our lead and put teams away. We had a double-digit lead the entire game and just couldn’t put them away and kept letting them stick around. When we get to that point we have to make sure we continue getting stops on defense and get great look after great look offensively but our attack cannot change,” Minton said.
The 2024-25 Boys Basketball team has a history of close games. “Going into overtime and playing all these close games with such a young group will only make these guys stronger and better for the future. Learning how to win close games or learning from our losses in close games will only benefit our guys as their careers continue,” Minton said.
On January 21st the team played Medora and won! The final score of the Varsity game was 67-47.
On Friday WW will play Mitchell at home. J.V. will start at 6 p.m. “Mitchell is coming in playing very well. They are big and physical. We have to make sure we match their physicality early and be ready to defend and rebound. All of their guys have experience and they bring back a really good core. They are very athletic and will be a big test for us,” Minton said.
Friday will also be Basketball Homecoming! The crowning of king and queen will take place between the J.V. and the Varsity game. “It will be a great atmosphere with homecoming on Friday and a big conference game. There is always that added pressure before a conference game but even more for us this weekend as we are looking to get our first conference win of the season against Mitchell and Perry Central,” Minton said.
The Perry Central game will be played at home on Saturday the 25th. This game was rescheduled earlier in the month due to weather conditions.
