Family
Laura Morris is excited to join the West Washington community. Her husband, Asa Morris, graduated from WW in 2007 and the couple has been married for 12 years. Together, they have two daughters; Audrey, age 10, and Ella, age 7, who attend Orleans Elementary. The Morris family stays on the move between work, sports, and hobbies. Asa operates his own business as a heavy agricultural equipment transporter, hauling large equipment like combines, sprayers, and tractors. Audrey and Ella stay active with dance and basketball, and in the spring and summer, they add softball and 4-H to their schedule. Laura adds, “We also have several animals to care for including 4 horses, 1 pony, 9 chickens, a cat, and a dog. They keep us busy!”

Experience
Laura is embarking on her teaching journey this semester, making the switch to education after 12 years in the accounting field. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Evansville and a master’s in Accountancy from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her career in accounting took her to various positions in Bloomington, Orleans, and Paoli, with her most recent role as an Accounting Manager at Electricom LLC in Paoli. Reflecting on her career change, Laura explains, “I decided that I wanted to explore other career opportunities that I might not have thought of before, but that I could hopefully still use my accounting background. I took an interest in teaching and felt that Math would be a good place to start.”

First Impressions
Starting her teaching career at West Washington has been an eye-opening experience for Laura. “The first few days have really been a learning experience, to say the least. Several of the preconceived ideas I had about teaching have definitely been thrown out the window. There's a lot to be said about not only knowing the subject that you are teaching, but learning how the students interact with you and with others, and how the school's overall vibe or feeling is. But I feel like I'm starting to connect more with the students and I am excited to see how we continue working together this semester,” Laura explained.

Interests/Hobbies
When she’s not in the classroom or caring for her animals, Laura enjoys reading historical fiction and indulging in her creative side. “I consider myself an arts & crafts-y person.  I like to travel when I have the opportunity.  Within the last couple of years, I have been out west and had the chance to see the Grand Canyon, the Hoover Dam, explore an abandoned gold mine, visit Las Vegas, and drive home on Route 66,” she shared.

Our Math Department is thrilled to have Laura Morris on board and her enthusiasm and dedication to her new role are already making a positive impact. Welcome to West Washington, Laura!
