The West Washington (WW) boys basketball team has had to move multiple games due to weather this season. “In terms of playing, rescheduling due to weather does not hurt our team. It actually allows us extra time to prepare. However, whenever we have two or three games that get moved in the same week it can be difficult just because we don’t know who and when we may play. We take it one day at a time and control what we can control,” head coach Ashton Minton said.
At this point in the season, Coach Minton wants his players to have adaptability. “The game of basketball is a game of runs. Our goal is to stop other teams from going on 8-0/10-0 runs. In order to do that you have to adapt. In a game players have to adapt our defense to a player that is playing well, maybe a defense that is or is not working, or even something as little as playing a different position because of foul trouble. Whenever a player can adapt to change, they will be more successful just because of the way the game changes throughout the course of the game,” Minton said.
Recently the team has played Crawford County, Borden and Christian Academy. WW dominated against Crawford with the final score being 82-43. After that, they faced Borden in a close game and the final score was Borden 50 and WW 42.
Last week on Friday they competed against Christian Academy. The final score was CAI 74 and WW 40. Game planning and execution are critical to compete and win a game. “When we stuck to our game plan I thought our kids did a really good job. We had a decent second half overall and played right with them the entire half. We have to continue sticking to the game plan and understanding what the other team is trying to get every possession. Continuing to prepare and execute the game plan is something we have to continue working on which will be crucial down the stretch,” Minton said.
On Friday the 21st WW will play against Henryville. The game will be away and J.V. tipoff is at 6 p.m. “Henryville has a couple of players who can really play. We have to stick to the game plan and limit their touches and limit their offensive rebounds. We have to control what we can control and take care of our side. The biggest keys recently that we have to continue improving are taking care of the ball, getting great shots on every possession, and really having the mindset of sitting down and stopping people on defense,” Minton said.
